East District Age Groups Championships Round 3

For the first time, the final round of these championships were held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh at the beginning of February.

The first event was the 100m butterfly for girls. Kimberley MacKay had a steady swim to reach the final and good swims from Beth McFarlane and Lauren Sutherland resulted in both very narrowly missing out, Beth by the very smallest of margins. In the final, Kimberley was not quite able to capitalise but finished in a very creditable 5th place.

In the girls 100m freestyle event Lauren Sutherland, Kimberley MacKay and Fiona Inglis all comfortably qualified for their finals where they eventually finished in seventh, fourth and eighth place respectively. Also in this event there were excellent swims from Eilidh Edmiston and Beth Denholm.

In the boys 100m breaststroke, both Ian Doyle and Lewis Thomson had great swims with both recording excellent personal bests.

The afternoon session on day one was reserved for the 200m individual medley for the younger age groups. Andrew Denholm, Iain Doyle and Lauren Sutherland all swam well with both boys recording personal bests. Lauren reached the final where she finished sixth.

Day 2 got off to a great start with a fantastic 100m butterfly swim from Andrew Denholm, just marginally missing the final.

In the 100m backstroke for girls, Kimberley MacKay qualified fastest for the final, however could not quite repeat this and finished second in a very closely contested race.

Ross Muego and Andrew Denholm again narrowly missed out on a place in the finals of the 100m freestyle. Ross’s converted time edging him ever closer to beating the magical 60 second mark. In the same event, Iain Doyle continued his good form setting another personal best and there was also a good swim from Ross Gardiner.

In the girls 100m breaststroke, Anna MacKay was reserve for the final and in this age group, Katie Golder also swam well. Lauren Sutherland and Beth McFarlane comfortably reached the final of the 13 years girl’s event as did Kimberley MacKay and Beth Denholm in the 14 years category. Meanwhile in the 15 years girl’s event Amy Sylvester finished also finished as reserve. In 2 very close races, Lauren emerged with silver, Kimberley with Bronze and both Beth McFarlane and Beth Denholm finished 4th.

Kimberley reach yet another final, this time fourth fastest in the 200m individual medley, however a faster swim in the final saw her improve by one place to take the bronze medal. In the same event there was also a very good personal best swim from Eilidh Edmiston.

The final events of the meet were the relays and Midlothian teams enjoyed some success. The 13/14 years girl’s medley team of Kimberley MacKay, Beth McFarlane, Beth Denholm and Lauren Sutherland were involved in a very close race eventually finishing in the Bronze medal position. The same swimmers with the exception of Beth McFarlane who was replaced by Hebe Ramsay made up the freestyle team who also won bronze.

Five swimmers comprised the 15 years and over teams. Amy Sylvester, Beth Gray, Jenny Jubb, Fiona Inglis and Sarah Eunson swam really well to finish 5th in both the freestyle and medley events.
