SASA East District Age Group Championships (Round 3)

Midlothian swimming club was again on winning form at the recent, East District Age Group championship Round 3 which was held at the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh on the 22-24th January. The swim team finished in fourth place for the team points competition behind the three largest clubs in the district.

The introduction of 50m events in all strokes, resulted in a very demanding weekend for many swimmers and provided a real test of their endurance. However Midlothian swimmers claimed seven titles comprising, three each for Fraser Wilson and Eilidh Redpath and one for Matt Rietvelt in butterfly. Fraser also won silver in breaststroke as did Beth McFarlane. Ellie Robertson won silver in butterfly with Katie Golder claiming bronze in backstroke.

Amongst the other swimming highlights, Fraser Wilson and Eilidh Redpath, were also very strong in the 100m events and the 200m IM. Eilidh won gold in the fly, breaststroke freestyle and IM and bronze in the backstroke whilst Fraser won gold in fly, back and freestyle and picked up silver in the IM. These swims combined with the results from the first 2 rounds resulted in Eilidh finishing as the top 13 years old girl and Fraser the top 13 years old boy.
The other medal winners in the longer events were, Katie with two bronzes in backstroke and breaststroke and Jodie Finlay in butterfly.
Head coach Colin Barton was “impressed by the all youngsters hard work in training, which has paid off with multiple podium places.”

In addition to the medal winners, there were also a huge number of personal best swims resulting in many youngsters reaching finals.

SASA East District Age Group Championships Round 1 (Second Day Event)

Midlothian swimmers were in action on Saturday 7th November at the second part of the SASA east district age groups, round 1 competition, held at the Michael Woods centre, Glenrothes.

Head coach, Colin Barton explained ‘We have been working towards these championships since the start of the season and it was great to see the swimmers being rewarded for their hard work.

The competition saw Katie Golder achieve a bronze medal in the girls, 15 year old 800 metre freestyle event in a time of 9:33.81. Whilst in the boys 15 year old, 400 Metre Freestyle event, Matthias Rietvelt managed fifth place with a time of 4:29.36.

Eilidh Redpth won gold in the girls 13 year old 400 metre individual medley event, with a tenth place for Jodie Finlay with a time of 5:37.26. Eilidh Redpath also achieved first place in the girls 13 year old 400 metre freestyle event, in a fast time of 4:37.09 while Jodie Finlay finished in eleventh place with her time of 5:00.55. In the younger girls category, girls 11-12 year old, 400 metre freestyle Ria Colbridge finished in 12th place with a time of 5:15.88, with Ellie Robertson achieved a time of 5:36.79.

The boys performed well in the 11-12 year old 1500 Metre freestyle event. Lewis Thomson finished in 8th place with a time of 19:36.83 whilst Jamie Ferguson finished in tenth place with his time of 20:18.51. In the boys 13 year olds 1500 metre freestyle category, Fraser Wilson finished in 4th place in a time of 18:01.92, whilst Euan Edmiston finished in ninth place with an impressive personal best time of 19:32.28. The next round of the competition will be held  on the 28th and 29th November.

Lothian Graded Meet – 2015

18 swimmers from Midlothian Swimming Club competed in this year’s Lothian Region meet in Prestonpans.

The first medal was a bronze for Fraser Burgess in the 100m IM and he was soon followed onto the podium by Gemma Gerstenberger who picked up silver in the 100m backstroke.  In the 50m freestyle, Fraser finished in the silver medal position and Calum Evans finished fourth in the final.  Gemma reached her second final, this time the 100m freestyle and went one better with Gold after an excellent swim which brought session 1 to a close.

Fraser Burgess and Calum Evans got the second session of to a great start winning gold and bronze respectfully in the 50m backstroke. Sam Paterson qualified for the 100m butterfly final and narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in fifth place. This was followed by the final of the 50m butterfly which featured Ria Colbridge and Gemma Gerstenberger who finished second and fourth.

In the same event for the younger age group, Abigail Porteous claimed silver and Emily Durkie finished 5th in the final and in the corresponding boys event, Calum Evans won gold with a very determined swim.  In the final event, Gemma Gerstenberger capped off a great day with an excellent swim to win the 100m breaststroke final.

Coach Colin Barton said “This was an opportunity for swimmers who do not normally feature on the podium to take centre stage and in addition to the number of finalists and medal winners; it was very pleasing to see a large number of personal bests being recorded.”

Heart of Midlothian Premier Age Group Meet – October 2015, Prestonpans

Twenty four Midlothian swimmers recently competed at the Heart of Midlothian Premier age group meet at Prestonpans, which attracted swimmers from all over the country.

In the 50m freestyle and 50 m butterfly events, Eilidh Redpath, Jamie Ferguson and Fraser Wilson all won Gold medals with Jamie Ferguson and Fraser Wilson repeated this in the 200m backstroke.

Eilidh Redpath also won the 200m breaststroke and 50m backstroke with Jodie Finlay finishing second.

Jamie Ferguson and Fraser Wilson again were on winning form with gold in the 50 m backstroke and the 200m freestyle events.

All 4 swimmers featured on the podium in the 50m breaststroke, Eilidh and Jamie winning gold, whilst Jodie and Fraser won silver before Eilidh rounded off the first day winning the 200m butterfly.

The second day saw Eilidh Redpath win 100m Individual medley and this was matched by Jamie Ferguson and Fraser Wilson in the 200m event and wins for them all in 100 m freestyle. In addition Eilidh Redpath won the 100m breaststroke in her category, with Fraser Wilson winning silver and Jodie Finlay taking bronze in her category.

All 4 were back in the medals in the final session. In the individual medley, Eilidh won gold and Jodie claimed silver in the 200m whilst Jamie and Fraser both won gold in the 100m event. The 2 boys repeated this feat in the last 2 events winning the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly and in the same 2 events; Eilidh took silver and gold respectfully.

In addition to the host of medals, Fraser and Eilidh set no fewer than 5 meet records each.   They were both awarded top girl and top boy amd Jamie Gerguson won that honour in his age category for his swims.

Head coach, Colin Barton was delighted with the success saying “all the swimmers should all be proud of their individual performances.” 

Midlothian Annual Sports Awards – Friday 30th October 2015

Our very own Fraser Wilson was looking very smart, as he attended the Midlothian Annual Sports Awards  on Friday 30th October 2015. The event was held at The Lasswade Centre hosted by Midlothian Council to honour a whole range of local sporting heroes.

Fraser had been commended in the Junior Sports Personality category. This was in recognition of his achievements in swimming over the past year. He is current Scottish Age Group Open Champion in the 50 metre butterfly and the Scottish National Age Group Champion in the 50, 100 and 200 metres backstroke.

Awards were made in the following categorys, Senior Sports Personality, Junior Sports Personality, Senior Team, Junior Team, Coach of The Year, Service To Local Sport, Volunteer of The Year.

Provost Joe Wallace presented prizes saying “It’s an honour to present these awards to so many inspirational athletes as well as those who coach or volunteer.

“The dedication and commitment you show to your chosen sport is wonderful. You are all a credit to Midlothian. Well done to everyone. You are all sporting heroes.”

SASA East District Age Group Championships – 31st October 2015

Ten Midlothian swimmers were in action on 31st October 2015 at the Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes for the first round of the SASA east district Age Group Championships swim meet.

Katie Golder came in third place for her 400 metre individual medley swim in the 15 year girls category in 5:11.25 with Beth McFarlane gaining a ninth place in the girls 16 years and over event in 5:24.42. Katie Golder achieved a fourth place for her 400 metre freestyle swim in 4:43.39 with a fifteenth place finish for Beth McFarlane in her age category with a time of 4:50.52.

In the girls,13 year old 800 meter freestyle event, Eilidh Redpath won in a time of 9:32.23 with Jodie Finlay finishing in fifth place with a time 10:00.70 whilst Ria Colbridge finished in tenth place with her 800 meter swim in the girls 11-12 year old event, with a fast time of 10:46.28.

The 1500 metre freestyle event for 15 year old boys, saw an impressive fourth place for Matthias Rietvelt in 17:37.64.

In the Boys 13 year old 400 metre individual medley event, Fraser Wilson won with a time of 5:03.58 with a seventeenth place for Euan Edmiston in 5:43.40. Whilst in the 400 metre freestyle event, Fraser Wilson won gold with a time of 4:28.31 while Euan Edmiston finished in fourteenth place with a time of 4:55.72.

Lewis Thomson achieved a tenth place finish in the Boys 11-12 400 metre freestyle event with a time of 5:02.46. While Jamie Ferguson finished in a time 5:09.46 with his 12th place swim and he also gained an 11th place in the Boys 11-12 400 Metre Individual Medley event with a 5:48.87 time.

Lincoln Vulcans Short Course Open Meet – Sheffield October 2015

Two Midlothian swimmers were representing SASA East district team this weekend. They were competing in the Lincoln Vulcans short course open meet, at Pondsforge pool, Sheffield. Fraser Wilson won gold medals in two events in his Boys 13 year old category. Swimming his 100m backstroke, in a time of 1:04.57 and 200m backstroke in a time of 2:20.10, not content with this he won a silver medals in his 400m Freestyle event with a time of 4:28.74 and the 200m Individual medley event in a time of 2:22.84.

Eilidh Redpath was also in action at this meet, winning silver medals in the girls 13 year old 400m Freestyle event with a time of 4:45.29 and the 200m Individual medley event in a time of 2:35.51 13. Also coming in third place to win a bronze medal for her 200m Freestyle race in a time of 2:14.05 and fifth place in 100m Backstroke event with a time of 1:12.49

This was a warm up event for the Asa National County team event (Division 1) which took place on Sunday again at Pondsforge in Sheffield. The youngsters were representing their swimming district for the first time.

Fraser Wilson gained second place in the Boys 12/13 Yrs 100m Backstroke event and 7th in the Boys 12/13 Yrs 100m Butterfly race. Eilidh Redpath was competing as part of the team in the Womens 12/13 Yrs 4x50m Medley event, where they achieved 19th place with a time of 2:10.73. Fraser Wilson also took part in the mixed 6x50m Freestyle relay event where they managed 10th place with a time of 2.37.69. This meant that the SASA East district team finished in tenth place overall, on the leader table with 324 points and successfully managed to avoid relegation into the second division.
