Livingston District Dolphins Development Gala – 21st January 2017

Youngsters from the Development squad of Midlothian swimming club were in action on Saturday 21st January at the Livingston District Dolphins Development Gala. This event was the first taste of competition for many of our swimmers and it was held at  the Xcite pool at Whitburn.

In the girls 8 & under category, Layla Sensat finished in thirteenth place with her 25 metre breaststroke swim and sixteenth position with her 25 metre butterfly performance.

The boys swimming in the 8 & under 25 metre butterfly event saw Lewis Fraser finish in seventh place, who went one position better, finishing in sixth place, with his 25 metre breaststroke performance. He also finished in ninth place with his 25 meter backstroke swim and eleventh position in the 25 metre freestyle.

While in the Girls 9 Year old category, the 50 metre breaststroke event saw a fourth place finish for Ellie Cassidy with Gracie Blair and Jessica Smith finishing in 16th and 22nd place respectively. The 25 metre butterfly event saw Gracie Blair finish in 21st place ahead of Jessica Smith in 25th place. While the 50 metre backstroke saw tremendous swimming and a fourth place for Sophie Vyse and fifth for teammate Ellie Cassidy with Gracie Blair finishing in 25th spot. Sophie Vyse again finished in fourth place with her 50 metre freestyle swim in a blistering time of 46.69, with Ellie Cassidy finishing in 11th spot and making do with 27th and 28th places were Jessica Smith and Gracie Blair.

In the boys 9 Year old category swims, Kristopher Morris finished in eigth place with his 50 metre freestyle also finishing in ninth place with his 25 metre butterfly swim, and ending up in 16th spot with his 50 metre backstroke swim and a respectable 21st place in his 50 metre breaststroke swim.

In the exciting relay events the mixed 9 & under 100 metre freestyle relay team finished in seventh place consisting of Lewis Fraser, Layla Sensat, Kristopher Morris and Ellie Cassidy.
In the afternoon there were good solid swims in the girls 10 year old 25 metre butterfly with 23rd, 31st, 34th and 39th place finishes for Olivia Young, Eva Billett, Sky Kivlin, and Lauren Billett. The 50 metre breaststroke saw a 28th place for Sky Kivlin and a tight finish between Eva and Lauren Billett who finished in 30th and 31st place with Olivia Young ending up in 39th spot. There was a tremendous sixth place swim for Sky Kivlin in the 50 metre backstroke, with a 20th place for Olivia Young, with teammates Lauren and Eva Billett finishing in 28th and 35th places. The 50 meter freestyle swim saw a tenth place this time for Sky Kivlin. While Olivia Young also finished in 23rd spot in the same event with Lauren and Eva Billett again finishing well in 30th and 37th places.

In the Boys 10 year old category, JonahTurnbull won the 50 metre backstroke and  finished in second place with his 25 metre butterfly swim, with teammates Sam Whitehorn, William Mackinnon and Lucius Armitage finishing in 10th , 11th and 12th places respectively. The 50 metre breaststroke and 50 metre backstroke saw 12th and 13th place finishes for Lucius Armitage and William Mackinnon in both events. Jonah Turnbull also finished in fourth place in the 50 meter freestyle with a sixth, eighth and ninth place finishes from teammates, Sam Whitehorn, William Mackinnon and Lucius Armitage.

In the 50 metre butterfly event there was an eighth place finish for Hollie Milligan who also went on to achieve a twelfth place finish with her 50 metre breaststroke swim in the girls 11 year old category.  However her best swim came in the 50 metre backstroke where she finished in fifth place.

There was a demonstrartion of great form from Ruaridh Fraser finishing in sixth place in the boys 11 year olds 50 metre butterfly and breaststroke swims achieving a seventh place with his backstroke and a tenth place finish in the 50 metre freestyle aswell.

The competition was rounded off by a blistering performance by the youngsters in the 
mixed 10-11year old 200 metre freestyle relay team, where a combined performance from Jonah Turnbull, Sky Kivlin, Ruaridh Fraser and Hollie Milligan achieved a second place finish with a time of   2:59.22 .

Development coach Lesley Inglis was “impressed by the youngsters,” but took time to remind them, that there “were still improvements to be made on technique”
