Annual Midlothian Minnows

The 7th Annual Midlothian Minnows took place at the Mercat Gait Pool in Prestonpans on Saturday 16th May. Swimmers aged 8 to 12 took part from eight competing clubs. A lot of good times were put in despite it being the 1st competition for some of the younger swimmers. Midlothian did well, leading in the 1st half, but were overtaken in the second half by Hearts and Kelso. Kelso took the Minnows trophy back home with them beating Hearts by a mere 10 points and Midlothian by 13.

The Gala would not have been such a success without the help of the officials and timekeepers, so many thanks to them.

Vicky and Callum, from Gold Squad had their hands full looking after Development Squad, as Stuart was a bit busy getting hitched! Congratulations Mr and Mrs MacArthur!

Rachel, Jack and David did a great job marshalling all of the swimmers-everyone made their races on time and the whole mornings events were ahead of schedule.

Robbie and Lindsay were exhausted doing the “running” and keeping everyone informed of results. No rest for Lindsay, despite it being her birthday.

Other Gold squad swimmers helped on dry side-running Tombola, taking the money at the door, and helping in the café. Laura in particular, did a fine job serving teas and cake and even washing dishes-will this mean she is more domesticated at home? I have my doubts! Thanks go to Hazel for running the café so efficiently with the help of Moira and Mairi.

We made a bit of profit on the day, with sales of excellent baking, teas, Tombola etc, final totals still to be worked out. Thanks to Fergus we had a lot of sponsorship this year, which will add to our profit.

Our “Build a Bear” Minnow was won by D. Alexander from West Lothian and the lucky programme winner of the £50 Howgate voucher was Alex Finlay from Midlothian.

Final thanks go to the Gala committee, which has been organising since Christmas. The hard work paid off and we are looking forward to our 8th Minnows Gala in 2010!

Every year the committee awards the Ruby Brocky Trophy to someone whose work with the club is not always recognised. This year it was awarded to John Bruce, who has been supporting Midlothian Swimming Club longer than many of our kids have been swimming! Every year he produces our Gala information, collates all of the entries and works behind the scenes (or in the cupboard!) on the computer, ensuring that all heats are recorded. He officiates at East District events, as well as our club championship finals and is always available to give us advice on Official SASA matters. As John was unable to make it to our Presentation Dance in January, William Wood, Vice President, presented the award at the Minnows meet.
