Scottish Age Group Championships – April 2009

These championships were at the Royal Commonwealth Pool during April this year. The standard is always very high however, this year it was raised a bit more as there were swimmers from 31 clubs from England participating.
A total of 9 Midlothian swimmers qualified and, on the whole, competed very well, however, due to illness, Fiona Inglis was unfortunately unable to take part after qualifying for the 100m freestyle. Times were generally slower with swimmers from all clubs struggling in the conditions, so any personal bests were fairly rare.

Chris Kerr won bronze in the 100m breaststroke and finished 7th in the 200m breaststroke final.

Lisa Fraser narrowly missed a medal when she finished 4th in the final of the 100m backstroke and 5th in the 200m backstroke. However she had the consolation of having a really good meet, recording personal bests in all 4 of her events.

Lindsay Sinclair had 2 swims and swam particularly well in the 100m freestyle reaching the final and finishing 6th with a good PB.

Jo Pettitt, who has been suffering from a virus recently, continued to improve and was only marginally outside her best on all her 4 swims. She just missed 2 finals finishing in 1st reserve and 2nd reserve places in the 100m and 200m freestyle respectively.

Robbie Dalgetty was just outside his best in the 100m backstroke but hit a good PB in his 100m freestyle.

Nicola Thorburn was pleased with her swim in the 100m backstroke although it was marginally outside her best.

Jack Bissett did extremely well to qualify for the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. He has never previously competed at this level and on the day, I think he allowed the occasion to influence him and was a bit outside his best, however gained a huge amount from the experience which will stand him in good stead for the future.

Our final qualifier was Thomas Dryden, the only swimmer from Silver squad. Thomas was also a bit outside his best in the 100m backstroke but is still eligible for this age group next year and this experience will also prove invaluable then.
